Spock Is In The House!

Spock has arrived in the shop!
He's pointy from his ears to his eyebrows, with his trademark bowl haircut.
His shirt is made with 100% cotton yarn (because, why not?) and seriously, just check out the swanky arm candy (a.k.a. golden details) on his shirtsleeve?

Eh? EH? Pretty cool.

Cool, like Spock. That sort of unassuming coolness one gets not by flagrantly TRYING to be cool (JIM!) but by being so logically right almost 100% of the time ("almost", because well...he IS human).

You can buy him solo, or paired with Jim for a cute set.

Check him out here.

I've also been working very intently on another special order, and I can't show you pictures of the doll yet, but here's a hint...

Until next time- have a fun day!

I Have Been and Always Shall Be...Your Friend.

Yes, everybody's favorite Vulcan is finally coming to Galaxy Dolls! What would a SciFi shop be without him?

Rubbish.
Complete rubbish.

Spock is the epitome of nerd cool. Without Spock, Star Trek TOS is not worth watching.
I know, that's a bold statement. Especially if you, reader, happen to be a die-hard Kirk fan.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying ALL Star Trek would be rubbish without Spock...I'm a huge fan of the other three (THREE) series.
But The Original Series would be TOO comical without the dry puns and cold logic of this green-blooded protagonist.
And I'm sorry, but it's true.

Spock IS Star Trek.

So when I say he's finally coming to Galaxy Dolls, you can bet he's been long overdue.

Little Spock has got some work yet to be done- he needs those iconic pointy ears and bold 'brows, and well...he's headless at the moment.

But he should be in shop early next week!!

So I'll leave you with this picture to wish you a GREAT weekend:

Until next time- have a fun day!

Little Indy Has Arrived

*cue fanfare*

After FAR too long a wait (two weeks??), Little Indy has finally decided to buck up and grace us with his presence.
What can I say? Underneath that cool exterior lies a temperamental heart.

But he's HERE and he's fabulous.

Yes, he has his whip and a knapsack
that really opens and can hold stuff.
Like potato-rocks.

His hat is removable, along with his whip and knapsack.
I decided to go with a hot glue gun method of adhering the felt together because using a needle and thread was not only more delicate a process, but yielded unsightly stitch marks and holes.

He's now in the shop and ready to make the trek to your hometown for exploration and mischief!

Have a fun day!

Little Indy still in Progress, Finger Puppets Now in Shop!

So little Indy is STILL in the process of coming to life:

He still needs his jacket, hat, and knapsack. So while waiting for his completion I thought I'd better add something to the shop!

Yes, Star Trek, again.
Are you really that surprised??

I crocheted five little finger puppets to keep you from the inevitable boredom that seeps in while sitting there, in your cubicle, pretending to work.

Come on, don't pretend. I KNOW. You're crazy-bored.
But the second your boss walks by you'll quickly minimize this screen, showcasing a graft, or report, or some other work-related project that's been driving you up a wall for weeks.

See, I totally understand. I've been there.
And what would have kept me from hours of mind-numbing excel spreadsheets would have been these little guys.

If only I had these finger puppets back then, I might not have taken to conversing with the printer.
And fax.
And even the pen cup if the other two were being passive-aggressive (stupid printer thinks he's so important...)
But I didn't, so I did, and here I am. Trying to save you from that day-to-day fate of water-cooler chit-chat and watching coffee drip.

Take my advice. Give your hands a break from the keyboard and play a little Star Trek. You'll thank me for it. And so will the printer...trust me, he's kinda tired of listening.

Until next post- have a fun day!

Little Indy Progress

It's been a week since my last finished doll, but rest assured I am working to get one out as soon as possible!
I'm currently crocheting Indiana Jones, who comes with plenty of fine felt clothing to labor over, not to mention the hat.

This is just a picture of an action figure,
but it is my reference.
Except for the potato-esque rock.

I do plan on including a tiny felt knapsack as well.

Also-!
My friend that ordered Xavier and Sherlock has started a webpage entitled "The Adventures of Little Sherlock". She will be traveling to London next month, and plans on visiting 221B Baker street, among other notable scenes from the show (BBC's "Sherlock"). She will be including pictures of the Sherlock amigurumi as he travels to these places as well.
She's writing it from the perspective of tiny Sherlock, and I can already tell it will be a hilarious adventure for her readers.
Check it out!

Until next time- have a fun day!

Finished Xavier, Professor of The X-Men

Well, it's Monday morning and I've finished the Charles Xavier special order I was working on all last week.
And here he is, calm and resplendent in his wheelchair:

Wheelchair:

The wheelchair is made from yarn, pipe cleaners, and plastic canvas (for stability).
And though it looks simple, it was quite an undertaking!

Here is a side view, and Xavier alone (not that he could ever stand on his own, but who knows...?)

My next amigurumi for the shop is either going to be a Borg from Star Trek, or Indiana Jones.
Check back soon to find out which!

Have a fun day!

Professor Xavier

So a few days ago a friend of mine asked if I could make her a Charles Xavier doll, wheelchair included.
How could I refuse such an awesome request? Charles Xavier (Professor X to his students) is the founder and backbone of X-men, a group of advanced humans with superhuman abilities.
Professor X is played by the always-superb Sir Patrick Stewart (a personal favorite of mine).

I originally had some misgivings about crocheting a wheelchair (without which it would just be Captain Picard in a suit), but after some serious pondering on wire inserts, I'm ready to give it a shot.

The Ami (which has wire in his limbs for adjustability) is featured in his dark suit and powder blue shirt, as seen below.

Pocket tissue!

His grey and black wheelchair is currently being worked on, and I'm feeling very pleased with how it is shaping up.
This project should be done early next week, and will not be for sale in the shop (it's a special order).

I'm already pondering my next doll for the shop- check back soon to see what it will be!

Have a fun day!

Galaxy Doll's First Dozen, Plus One

In this post I will showcase the first twelve amigurumi's in my shop, plus one extra which was a special request.

The first Ami is BBC's "Sherlock", an updated incarnation of Conan Doyle's masterpiece.
I don't normally go in for modern remakes, and when I first started watching season one I was convinced I would hate it.
Cell phones? In Sherlock? PUH-lease. *eye roll*
But I was drawn in by the awesome cinematography, and how well the actors actually...acted.
It was great!
...and then came the two year hiatus for season three and what else was I supposed to do?
Crochet a mini Sherlock, of course. ^_^

And NO collection is complete without a Yoda.
Seriously, I don't think I've ever seen a SciFi collection which lacked this wise-cracking, backwards-babbling green glob.
Because even though the Muppet was lumpy and fuzzy and should, by all accounts, be considered ugly, for some reason people can't get enough of him.
So, here's my take on the popular Jedi master:

And Spiderman:

Batman, who I originally wanted to make in an all-black Bat suit (from the Nolan-verse), but, well... black-on-black crochet doesn't show up too well.
So, classic Batman:

A Dalek (Doctor Who) and Frodo Baggins (Lord of the Rings):

So would a Dalek try to take The Ring if it gave them
supreme rule? How would they even WEAR it?

Doctor Who's Tenth and Eleventh Doctors (or 11th and 12th, depending on which side you're on. But let's not go there...).
Confession: I was a total Doctor Who HATER: the cheesy story lines, the over-the-top acting, the complete silliness of the aliens...I would roll my eyes and laugh any time I heard the words "TARDIS" or "Doctor" (except, of course, when someone was talking about a real-life medical doctor...I swear, I don't laugh at surgeons).
But then a certain family member forced me to watch it under threat of bodily harm.
Okay, maybe under threat of name-calling.
...or y'know, they might've actually asked nicely....but the point is I watched it and have liked it since.
It's quirky.
It's not hard-core SciFi, but more of a fantasy.
And once I thought of it as such, I could totally dig it.

Awesome hair, guys.

And my personal favorites, the Star Trek captains.
Kirk, Picard, Sisko, and Janeway. You can't really go wrong by crocheting a few Star Trek characters because the fan base is HUGE. Huge, like people are dressing their newborns in little Starfleet uniforms.
Or their dogs.
Or themselves.
And I should know- I grew up with Star Trek. I was one of the minority of kids who saw "The Wrath of Kahn" before I could even spell Kahn. Or Wrath. Or much of anything, really.
(I still stink at spelling, but now I blame autocorrect).
I remember sneaking out of bed at 10:00pm to watch "Voyager" on UPN.
Oh what a rebel, I was. Haha.
So, yeah......Star Trek will be a regular theme in my shop.

You know you've always wanted to see them all together.
Well, here you go. You're welcome.
And one item not in the shop, a "Moe Szyslak" doll from the cartoon "The Simpsons."
This was a special request a couple months back, and I'm happy with the way he turned out:

I am currently working on another special request, which I will cover in an upcoming post later this week!

Inaugural Post

So you like dolls, eh?

It's okay, I won't judge you. Because I like dolls too. And my favorite doll is called an "Amigurumi", which is the Japanese art form of crochet.
Yes, crochet.
You remember that thing your grandma used to do while sitting around drinking tea and watching Cary Grant movies?
And how could one forget the scarves every Christmas? And the hats?
(And the mittens, and the adult booties, and the blankets...)

Ahhh yes, NOW you remember.

Well THAT, is crochet.

But I bet you didn't know you could make more than afghans with one little hook and some yarn?
That you could make dolls.
Character dolls.
And that you could use this new-found skill as an outlet for an already burgeoning cache of nerdliness and dorkery.

But you can. And that's what I did.
My first Amigurumi was Star Trek's Captain Picard, and though it bore a paltry resemblance to the  actual Character (really, only the communicator badge gave a clue to the poor souls whose opinion I gleefully implored) I kept working at it and finally came to a place where my character was not only recognizable, but cute.

And then, I made some more.

...and...more.

And it didn't take long before intervention was needed, and I knew I would either have to rent another apartment, stop crocheting, or find some way to continue making Ami's without actually keeping them all.

Well, stopping wasn't an option.
I mean really- once you've had your own cuddly, handmade Yoda or Picard, how are you supposed to just...stop?

Thus, Galaxy Dolls was created.
And my mission is simple: Make other people as happy with their own cuddly character as I am with  making them!

My absolute favorite dolls to crochet are SciFi, Fantasy, and Batman (which gets his own category), but I also enjoy recreating cuddly versions of cartoon characters, fictional people from television series or movies, and even game characters.

This blog is coupled with my etsy account (found here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/GalaxyDolls) as a way to showcase more than just the dolls that are for sale. It will highlight what I'm currently working on, as well as provide an archive for past creations (so you, dear reader, can get a better feel for what kinds of Ami's I will carry and what kind I can make if they pique your interest).

So look around, check out some of my creations, and pop on over to the shop to see if what you find here is ready to take home and love!

Have a fun day!

-Hannah
